DO NOT SILENCE ME: Exploring Women’s Roles Through Stitch

March 8, 2022 By

Women’s History Month brings us an exciting first solo exhibition by Kansas City-based female textile artist Linda Jurkiewicz. Jurkiewicz’s work is narrative, thoughtful, and equal parts charming and unsettling. She uses her art to as a form of catharsis for her self but also to share the stories of what the women in her family have endured.
In the Artist’s words:
“I am exploring the cultural mores placed on women: imposed care taking, silence, lesser status in relationships and work, religious doctrine, perceptions of weakness, as well as self-imposed restrictions and lack of self-determination.
I upcycle repurposed materials, especially from “women’s work” such as dish towels, sheets, household items and clothing. My fiber work incorporates soft sculpture, word play, idiom, embroidery, wall hangings, plush form, sequential dioramas, and installations. These delve into the cultural roles of women in America over the last century; roles that are changing, and roles that push viewers to reexamine, to trade nostalgia for empowerment.
Textile art is easily accessible to the viewer. It is familiar, a silent language of hearth and home. It can speak to the viewer intimately and quickly reveal bias, create subconscious connections, and show the seams, where we have worn out ideas that need to be pieced together in new ways.
Textile work is about memory.”

Marn Jensen + Andy Newcom: Art of the Wish

March 3, 2022 By Leedy-Voulkos Art Center

Artists Andy Newcom and Marn Jensen have been friends and creative co-workers for over 35 years and share a love for older people. As Hallmark Barbara Marshall Award co-winners in 2018, they were given the opportunity to work on a passion-led project. Together they chose to interview over 200 elders across the country — to gather their wishes for themselves, their families and for the world. Based on those wishes to the world, Newcom and Jensen created artwork in a poignant and memorable way. The event was met with great enthusiasm and success, so they continued their mission to give voice to those who are not always heard.

This exhibit comprises a range of mediums — from photographic to sculptural, textile to encaustic, mixed media to painting — allowing the “wish” to inspire the direction of each art piece. The artists were intentional about the materials used, often incorporating repurposed, found objects that had once been discarded and tossed aside. “Breathing new life into these objects is a perfect metaphor for appreciating the potential and beauty in old things,” they explained.

Experienced in both writing and visual art, Newcom and Jensen bring both aspects to this exhibit. “We have a love for story-telling as well as the visual work. It was important for us both to give each piece a slice of context to set the stage,” Newcom says. The artists’ wish is that this body of work inspires people to reach out and have a conversation with an elder. They promise, “it will not only make their day, but it will make your day, too.”

José Sierra: Entre sueños y memorias (Between Dreams and Memories)

January 31, 2022 By Sherry Leedy Contemporary Art

Rose Apple Dreams

Memories of rose apples, with their fragrant fruits. Sitting under their pink and red canopies. Petals made pink carpet that covers the earth.

Sitting enjoying the peace among a world of bustle

Rose-flavored fruit that works like a time machine with its flavor that brings back lost memories, for living every day

Trees in their flourishing season that become sanctuaries or time shuttles, carrying and creating thousands of memories of childhood and old age like an urban diary.
