This body of work explores the tension between faith and lived experience. Rich with fine lines of gold and luminous color, these pieces were created during an emotionally dark season of Back’s life — a time marked by betrayal, hypocrisy, and the distortion of scripture. Through that darkness, she embarked on a soul search for truth that was unwavering, trustworthy, and pure.
Each piece contains what Back calls “islands” — forms that are related but never quite touching. Her work emerges from the subconscious, holding the tension of what she knows to be true of God’s character and her experience of the failure and weakness of man.
