My art is about our connection to places. Each place has its own meaning and story. I try to let the place speak for itself and focus on capturing the life in the perspective lines, the mood of atmospheric depth, the linearity and rhythm of shadows, and the seemingly abstract shapes of people who inhabit the scene. In each piece I aim to capture something true and memorable.

Watercolor is my primary medium, but we have an open relationship. There are three things that I love about it. One, negative space it forces you to account for the foreground as you sketch the background. This creates a very connected painting. Painting the light as negative space, can bring an incredible luminosity. Two, when I get it right the reaction of the water and the paper and the texture will paint itself. Meaning the texture of a brushstroke will create a detail that I could never, or the way a dark zone will bleed up into a lighter creates a shadow gradient that I could not intentionally force. And three, I paint, multiple layers from top to bottom in value shades. That means that unrelated items may share the same shape. This makes for unexpected connections between elements that bring interest to connectivity to the work. So that’s why I like watercolor, but who knows, maybe some oil & acrylic in the works.
