THIS WEEKEND join us for STOUTERDAYS, a dark beer tap takeover in our Original Taproom! This dark beer festival will feature 11 dark beers from local, Kansas City microbreweries. Don’t miss our special beer/candy pairings in curated flights. This is as much a celebration of dark beer season as it is about celebrating our beer community, and rekindling those warm and fuzzy feelings from the days in our Original Taproom at 1725 McGee Street.

Participating breweries include: Alma Mader, Big Rip, Border, Casual Animal, Cinder Block, City Barrel, River Bluff, Strange Days, Stockyards, Torn Label, and Vine Street.

October 31 — Halloween Night Kickoff (5 PM)

  • Beer + Candy Flight Pairings: Curated flights from our selection of local dark beers paired with candy for the ultimate Halloween indulgence.

  • Free Cold Brew Samples: Get a taste of Cerberus cold brew, also available in 8oz bottles

  • S’mores Marshmallow Treats: Enjoy marshmallows with homemade graham cracker crumble, dark chocolate swirl stuffed in a homemade vanilla marshmallow

November 1 — 1st Fright-day Tarot with Lady MOG

  • Beer + Candy Flight pairings served all day

  • 6 pm : Free Tarot Readings: Lady MOG will offer three-card spreads to explore what lies in the darkness. Monetary donations appreciated.

November 2 — Casual Sloppy Joe Popup

  • Beer and candy served all day

  • Food Served 2pm — sell out

    • The Elusive Bul-Joe-Gi ($10): A bulgogi-sauced sloppy joe with fresh chive kimchi, served on a bun.

    • Your Cousin Joey (Vegan) ($10): A homestyle vegan sloppy joe on a sesame bun.

    • Sides: Mac n Cheez $3

Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium’s 25th Anniversary

Join the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium at Union Station Kansas City to celebrate the planetarium’s 25th anniversary with special events on November 1st and 2nd! The celebration weekend will kick off with a special extended showing of Laser Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version), featuring additional songs from the vault and updated tracks. Next up, Laser Lew will showcase his interactive laser art and immersive film Laser Visions. The planetarium’s birthday gift called for brand-new seating to be installed for all guests to have an out-of-this-world experience!

For the first time at the Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium, experience a live aerial silk performance entitled Confluence, featuring Voler Aerial Academy dancers and acrobats suspended high in the dome, accompanied by breathtaking visuals and an incredible score by acclaimed musician Calvin Arsenia. Then on Saturday morning, don’t miss the planetarium’s first-ever session of Yoga Under the Stars, featuring a relaxing backdrop of calming visuals projected on the 60-foot dome. The Influential Watchdog

The American Press. Are they truth sayers? Advisors to guide our votes? Neutral eyewitnesses? Or are they simply disappearing somewhere in between?

In 1791, freedom of the press was established in the First Amendment. Over 230 years later, with an ever-evolving technological and information landscape, what does freedom of the press and the responsibility of the press mean today?

After the first 2024 presidential debate, CNN was criticized for not fact checking candidates, especially former President Trump. The press also came under scrutiny for not shining a light on health concerns for President Biden. And although newspapers have been trending away from political endorsements, following the debate, the The New York Times editorial board called for President Biden to “leave the race” and declared former President Trump “unfit to lead.” Now, with Vice President Kamala Harris’ candidacy, the press has been chided for not asking tougher questions of the vice president, including not pushing more forcefully for a sit-down interview in a timely fashion.

Against the backdrop of the 2024 presidential election, this panel event will feature a discussion on the press’ role and influence on U.S. elections, diving into questions about whether the press continues to serve the basic principles that our founders envisioned, the role of local newsrooms, impacts of a polarized electorate and media landscape on local and national elections, and Americans’ views on the role and responsibility of the press.

Steve Kraske, host of “Up to Date” on KCUR 89.3 will moderate the panel discussion. Featured panelists include:

    • David Bauder, national media and entertainment writer – The Associated Press (AP News)
    • Joshua Darr, political scientist and associate professor – Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University
    • Jessica González, co-CEO – Free Press
    • CJ Janovy, director of content – KCUR 89.3 (Kansas City’s NPR Affiliate)
    • Nick Matthews, Ph.D., assistant professor – Reynolds Journalism Institute at University of Missouri

A pre-program reception will take place from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. The live program will begin at 7:00 p.m.
