Call to artist for submissions to our upcoming show The Figure in Contemporary Art; the 15th Annual Contemporary Figurative Show.

According to some, it now appears that figurative artwork has found its way from the periphery back to the center of the art world. Here at the Hilliard Gallery we have long been a voice for figurative artwork for over 15 years with our annual contemporary figurative art show, “The Figure in Contemporary Art.” We contend that figurative works never went to the periphery of the art world, but rather has always remained at the center or core of the contemporary artists and the art world. So, where do we see figure art being today, more importantly, what place does the human figure hold in Contemporary Art? This show will continue to explore these questions and maybe provide some answers.

The Hilliard Gallery located in the Crossroads Art District in Kansas City, Mo., is seeking submissions for consideration for the Gallery’s fifteenth Annual Contemporary Figurative Art Show- The Figure in Contemporary Art. This call is open to all mediums and creative styles of artwork. The show will open on the First Friday, April 1, 2022 and runs through May 25th, 2022. The show seeks to showcase the the place of the figure holds in Contemporary Art

The criteria for artwork are as follows:

The nature of figure art in contemporary art today is very eclectic and allowing for all experimentation possible. This show will feature a thoughtfully curated selection of exceptional artists whose works derive their subjects or inspirations from the figure.
This show is open to work in all media and styles.
All submitted works must be available for sale.
Submissions are accepted through CaFE and can be submitted HERE

Submission Deadline is March 14, 2022. ( If you are from out of the country we will give you ample time to get your work here by letting you know earlier if possible)

All accepted artwork delivered for the show by March 30th, 2022. Shipping of artwork is the responsibility of the artist.

Selected artwork must be available for sale during the show, and must be in its finished state. Artwork must be framed or ready to hang or displayed in a finished state. All artwork not sold during the show should be picked up or arrangements made for return shipping by June 6th, 2022.

“Finding artistic and beauty in the human form is only natural ”

and this show will showcase some of the best work doing just that.

DO NOT SILENCE ME: Exploring Women’s Roles Through Stitch

February 26, 2022 By

A solo Exhibition of the work of Linda Jurkiewicz

In the words of the artist:

I am exploring the cultural mores placed on women: imposed care taking, silence, lesser status in relationships and work, religious doctrine, perceptions of weakness, as well as self-imposed restrictions and lack of self-determination.
I upcycle repurposed materials, especially from “women’s work” such as dish towels, sheets, household items and clothing. My fiber work incorporates soft sculpture, word play, idiom, embroidery, wall hangings, plush form, sequential dioramas, and installations. These delve into the cultural roles of women in America over the last century; roles that are changing, and roles that push viewers to reexamine, to trade nostalgia for empowerment.
Textile art is easily accessible to the viewer. It is familiar, a silent language of hearth and home. It can speak to the viewer intimately and quickly reveal bias, create subconscious connections, and show the seams, where we have worn out ideas that need to be pieced together in new ways.
Textile work is about memory. ….
