Kansas City Society of Contemporary Photography — Current Works 2021

December 1, 2021 By Leedy-Voulkos Art Center

Remix: Love Over War — Changing the Narrative — Ada Koch

December 1, 2021 By Leedy-Voulkos Art Center

Ada Koch’s preoccupation with war began with her childhood in Oak Ridge, TN where both parents worked at the Oak Ridge National Laboratories, a production site for the Manhattan Project where researchers developed the atomic bomb. She was persistently reminded of WAR: the Cold War, the Vietnam War, anti-war songs, local bomb shelters, and bomb drills in school. Now, decades later, Ada revisits anti-war protest songs from the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s in her quest to understand the repetition of violent cycles. Sadly, the songs of the past are currently relevant in the context of local and international violence.

Collectively, the pieces in this show touch on causes of war (power, fear, confusion, misinformation) which lead to violence, hate, and death. Yet Ada promotes a REMIX, taking what we have learned from a violent history and hoping for a more positive outcome with an emphasis on love and individuals.

Katherine Bello is a contemporary abstract painter. Using playful mark-making and lush colour, she constructs her compositions through layers of thick paint and thin glazes.

Through an intuitive process, she builds the paintings over time – creating form, texture, light and space on two dimensional surfaces. Her work is deliberately open-ended, leaving interpretation from the viewer through the lens of their own life experience.

Katherine Bello’s goal as an artist is to capture a sense of place, a moment of time, or a feeling – to evoke a sense of wonder. Bello loves paint and paint brushes; bold, gestural mark-making and the interplay of color. She is influenced by light and landscape, poetry, history and science. Formerly educated in Chemical Engineering and Interior Design, Bello is drawn to the process of creating Something out of Nothing.

Summer Muse - Katherine Bello

“Summer Muse”

For Bello, art is a point of view, not only of the artist who creates the work, but also of the viewer who examines, interprets and lives with the art. As an Abstract painter, Bello strives to push formal boundaries – Always questioning, always curious, forever exploring. Spontaneity, intuition, and memory guide Bello as she continually embarks on re-contextualizing personal nostalgia through her abstract paintings.

Out of the Blue - Katherine Bello

Bello received her BS in Chemical Engineering from Kansas University in 1988. Bello’s desire to paint came to fruition later in her career. Subsequently, Bello studied Fine Art and Design at JCCC from 2006 – 2015. During this time, she developed her recognizable abstract style and attention to colorways. Bello later went onto study Fine Art at KCAI from 2014 – 2018 through their renowned continuing education program.

CDL — Fernando Achucarro

November 20, 2021 By mbeltrame@lead.bank

A new series of works by Fernando Achucarro, entitled CDL, represents the struggle within oneself that an artist must face every day. Each drawing is a representation of the abyss that exists between the cruel reality of everyday life, and the perfect universe that exists within each one of us. Achucarro’s work truck became his studio where most of his drawings from CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) were started and finished during his breaks.
