I've always had an interest in drawing and as soon as I realized you could do art as a career, I enrolled in a graphic design program at Fort Hays State University. Although the emphasis there was more on design than illustration, I always rooted myself in drawing, whether it was on paper or on a computer.
The piece submitted to Harrah's was inspired by your average playing card graphics. I thought the King & Queen looked a bit serious in those flat depictions, so the idea was to give them the spirit of a night out.
