Thou Mayest Coffee Shop and Cocktail Bar The name “Thou Mayest” is from John Steinbeck’s novel East of Eden and he first shares those words in a passage that means, “the way is open”. We interpret it to mean that for every action there is a reaction and that we need to be responsible and accountable people. We have selected Thou Mayest as our business name with the hope that while we stand here enjoying a great cup of coffee, we can reflect on the origin of the fruit, the bean, the region of the world it comes from and all the hands that helped in getting it to our coffee shop to share with you. We believe that coffee should create conversation and that those conversations can result in sharing, in new ideas, and in new opportunities. Our History Thou Mayest Coffee Roasters began its journey a couple years ago when two young friends and entrepreneurs, realized their mutual love of coffee. They knew that it had a wonderful story to know, to tell, and to share. Bo Nelson and Bill Holzhueter are the founders and are both active in the day-to-day business. Bo and Bill met the owner of this building through the Kauffman Entrepreneurial Program 1Million Cups of Coffee, a program that brings together young entrepreneurs and local business leaders. 419 East 18th had been the home of Mullikin Studio, a photography studio . The building, with its 110-year-old charm, brought these two groups together and created a space that we hope you will want to visit for Coffee, Cocktails, and mostly Conversation. Just to add a couple more “C’s” to the mix, we sell Cigars and have the number one outdoor Concert venue out our back door. Constructed circa 1904, the building first as an office and was transformed in the 1930’s in support of a growing automotive service and repair district in Kansas City.
