Madison Flitch gives a second life to local trees. We harvest trees from the Kansas City area and transform them into beautiful furniture pieces for your home or office. Our collections focus on high design (with a Kansas City flare) and the natural beauty of the wood to offer pieces that are unique, meaningful, and rare.
We’re inspired by our great-grandfather Madison, a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and forebear of the family wood-working business. A Flitch is an old English word for a slab of timber cut from a wood log.
Madison Flitch was founded by John Pryor in the summer of 2016. Longing to escape his corporate job in the Boston tech community, John returned to his roots in Kansas City to start a furniture making company that would bring the natural beauty of midwest trees to your home or office. He was formally trained at the Marc Adams School of Woodworking, where he continues to refine the art of fine woodworking through apprenticeships under furniture designer Michael Fortune and other masters at the school.
Located in the Crossroads district of Kansas City, Madison Flitch provides limited-release furniture designs from wood sourced around Kansas City. When John is able to find a good supply of wood with a meaningful story behind it, he creates a furniture collection where the tree determines the design. You can learn more about the design process and follow his search for meaningful trees by joining the mailing list or following his blog.
You can order items from the collections John has developed through the online store. You can also design and order a custom wood slabor “flitch” — due to John’s connections to hardwood suppliers, he can track down any local area wood slab and design a unique furniture piece for you.
